If you are interested in history and culture there are a wealth of archeological sites and cultural interest. In the bay itself you will see the island of Spinalonga with its fortress, recently brought into the spotlight by British author Victoria Hilsop as the setting for her popular novel “The Island”. The surrounding hillsides also offer a wealth of archeological sites and stunning views so if you enjoy nature hikes you can revel in the great outdoors and history at the same time!

A variety of sports are available on land and sea. Golf, hiking, horse riding, cycling and free climbing can all be enjoyed within a 50km radius. On the coast you are also spoilt for choice, sailing, diving, fishing, water skiing, wake boarding, jet ski, wind surfing are all on offer to add fun and excitement to your holiday!

If local color and relaxed shopping is more your thing there are a number of traditional villages in the area where you can savor authentic Cretan recipes, marvel at handicrafts passed down from generation to generation and experience the hospitality of the locals first hand. The picturesque town of Agios Nikolaos also offers a variety of shops and dining venues in a charming atmosphere. For those in search of a bit of night life there are a number of clubs available too that offer music and ambience for all ages and tastes.

Day excursions abound and can either be arranged privately with a car and driver where you get to set the day’s itinerary, or in small groups, the ideal option for families or friends traveling together. Get some fresh mountain air up on the Lasithi Plateau where you can explore 2 different caves: the Dyktaion Andron – sacred to the ancient God Zeus, the cave of Kronos (Zeus’ father), visit the Lasinthos Eco Park which offers interesting information on the local flora and fauna and traditional crafts, and enjoy a hearty traditional meal.
